Anse
Anse, situated at the Southern gateway to the Beaujolais region and to the East of the Pierres Dorées (Golden Stones) region is on the right bank of the Saône, at the point where it receives its affluent, the Azergues. With the neighbouring town of Ambérieux-dAzergues, it occupies the outer bend of the elbow that the river makes here.
With a rich past, already inhabited in prehistoric times, Anse is an important Gallo-Roman site mentioned in the itinerary of Antonin, under the name of Asa Paulini. Its Gallo-Roman fortifications dating from the C.3rd are perfectly preserved.
You must visit the Tower Castle: built at the beginning of the C.13th to defend the church of Lyons threatened by the Beaujolais people. This castle contains a labyrinth of rooms and staircases which call to mind the daily life in the castles of the Middle Ages. You will discover a mosaic going back to the Gallo-Roman period and certain treasures found during digs, exhibited in the little archaeological museum. The 25 metre high keep offers a splendid view over the valley of the Saône and the Beaujolais region.
You can also discover the tourist railway, the nautical base, of the Colombier, footpaths, and of course, meet the winegrowers who will initiate you into the delights of a fruity, convivial Beaujolais
