Antraigues
To live happily, live perched high up
such could be the motto of this Cévennes village. Antraigues appears perching on a rocky promontory of volcanic origin. It rears high above the valleys of the Volane, the Bise and the Mas, in the country of the basalt rocks that rise upward like organ pipes and the land of century-old chestnut trees.
The road that leads to the village winds through picturesque countryside with its succession of crops growing on their basalt terraces.
The Rocher du Fromage, a volcanic spur, is one of the outings attractions .In the distance the belfry of Antraigues, that was formerly the castle tower, watches over the houses with their red-tiled roofs and granite and volcanic stones.
One fine morning in 1964 Jean Ferrat stopped in the shade of the chestnut trees. The Ardèche hills will provide the subject matter of his songs. Every year from October to December, Antraigues is well known for its chestnut markets on Wednesday mornings. Also to be discovered, painting exhibitions, flea-market, arts and crafts fairs and boot sales all the year round.
On the way out from the village, the Saint-Roque chapel celebrates a pilgrimage every year on the 16th of August.
