Beauchastel
The villages of character in the Ardèche hills are an invitation to discover the past. Beauchastel is one of them.
Clinging to a hillside Beauchastel overlooks the Rhône and the Eyrieux as it has been doing since the C.12th It offers an exceptional view over the two valleys. The village takes its name from the castle built at that time. Unfortunately, the edifice suffered during the Wars of Religion that devastated the Ardèche region. All that remains of the castle is the tower that contemplates the village.
A saunter in the streets of Beauchastel is a true initiation into the architecture and the building techniques of the Middle Ages. The facades of the houses are a mixture of schist and pebbles from the Eyrieux. Covered passages and narrow streets converge on the village square.
The church too suffered the onslaught of fate. Standing close to the river it has been three times the victim of flooding. Mans faith helped to rebuild the place of worship notably in the C.16th and 18th . To be visited , the house of the Seigneurs which is the oldest house in Beauchastel
Beauchastel, for a long time threatened by the exodus of its inhabitants, has regained a new lease of life today. The association Confluence children and friends of the village, created in 1973 is devoted to protecting and renovating the village. Thanks to it Beauchastel has regained its former charms. It can bask in the title of village of character along with Alba la Romaine, Banne, Balazuc Antraigues
This association is also the originator of numerous activities, shows and festivals which are breathing life back into Beauchastel.
