Chambles
Dominating the gorges of the Loire, the little town of Chambles enjoys a geographic position and a panorama that are exceptional making it one of the most well known sites in the department. Situated on a promontory, from a height of 640 metres it looks over the lake of Grangent. You may as well be told straight away that you had better not suffer from heights, especially if you undertake to climb to the top of the prestigious C.11th tower that dominates the valley.
The church of Saint Pierre dates from the C.14th although its apse is Romanesque, and under cover of its apparent simplicity there are hidden treasures: its baptismal, font its carved wooden pulpit and its marble altar. The museum devoted to school in the olden days is also worth a visit. It is hidden round a bend on a winding road.
As for its natural setting the region and countryside around offer numerous possibilities for walks. Indeed some are organised by the town itself on the last Sunday in June.
Gastronomy is also honoured in September with what is known as the Chamblouseries, a hymn to the local products. Make the most of this period at the end of the summer to spoil yourself with all the products that are offered for your consumption.
