Chatillon-surChalaronne

An independent seigniory up to the C.12th , Chatillon fell under the domination of the Dukes of Savoy at the same time as Bresse in 1272. With their impetus and benefiting from a commercial charter, the town became the most advanced stronghold of the Savoy states thanks to trade fairs, markets and prosperous arts and crafts.
It is a town that is famous for its floral decorations and it has won the Grand Prix National for that since 1991.
The old castle, the former residence of the Seigneurs of the Middle Ages, was modified by the Counts of Savoy. Gutted by fire in 1601, impressive ramparts are still standing. Built in 1440, partially reconstructed in 1670 after the fire that burned it to the ground , the ramparts measure 80 metres in length and 20 metres in width. They bear witness to the importance of the town as a trading centre at all times.
Also to be visited is the museum of tradition and local life ( Musée Traditions et Vie). It presents reconstructions of scenes of rural life in the Dombes and Bresse areas at the beginning of the century. It is found near the old castle and the Cultural Centre of the Dombes region (Centre Culturel des Dombes).
It was here that Saint Vincent de Paul, the emblematic figure of the town(1581-1660), carried out his actions based on faith and discipline amidst the peasants of the region.
