Perouges
Pérouges, a fortified, medieval town situated 34 kilometres from Lyons, nestles on a hill in the plateau of the Dombes. It is an excellent tourist spot and the site was saved from demolition in 1909 thanks to a virulent press campaign. The little township has preserved history in each of its stones, in each of its winding streets. It became French in 1601 after having belonged to the Dukedom of Savoy. In Pérouges, everything is done to help you spend an agreeable moment: do not miss the different gates to the town, the Place du Tilleul, the Rue des Rondes,, the fortress church that has served many a time as a cinema decor for its old stones evoke times immemorial, the times from Saint-Louis to Louis XI.
You will also appreciate the Pérouges galette (biscuit), a local speciality to be nibbled with a glass of cider ( not so local) and the unusual shops of the winding streets.
