Pommiers-en-Forez

At the limits of the Forez and Roannais regions, you will see a little village perching above the secondary road, D94. Pommiers-en-Forez, coming straight out of the deep past, is a real haven of peace and tranquillity. It is a good place to get to away from Lyons and its legendary pollution once the fine weather arrives.
The village, which has been built around the C.11th Benedictine monastery, jealously preserves its numerous and beautiful traces of the past. The old part of Pommiers still enclosed within its fortifications is entered through two fortified gates.
Inside the village, the church, dating from the C.11th and 12th is striking in its imposing austerity. The strong pillars separating the principle nave from the lower sides are impressive because of the idea of strength that they suggest. The little chapels that surround the choir are also very interesting if only for their C.16th murals. Also to be seen is the huge sarcophagus lid from the Gallo-Roman period which constitutes the altar support.
For those of you uninterested in architecture, there is always the wonderful surrounding countryside for you to stretch your legs. Or you can go and learn about the arts and crafts of the Forez region in the Museum of the Old Pommiers (le musée du Vieux Pommiers). This small museum conducts you through the past ages of Pommiers via objects evoking the pre-historic, Gallo-Roman or medieval periods.
