Saint-Montan

This village counts no fewer than three churches: Saint André de Mitroys, dating from the Romanesque era of the C.12th .

The old parish church , made up of a chapel and, juxtaposed, a much bigger church modified at different times, is a classified historic monument today. Finally, the Sainte Marie-Madeleine church in the middle of the village, also dating from the C.12th .The priest at the time was never able to finish the higher part of the belfry for he needed 800 francs to do so.

The fortified castle, built on a spur of the Agache, belonged to about forty seigneurs. Its ruins go back to the period between the C.12th and C.14th , and dominate the houses of the medieval village, huddled against the fortified walls which ensured their protection.
Around, the countryside has remained intact since the arrival of our hermit in the C.5th : the Val Chaud, a wild comb with limestone rocks, the grotto of Saint Montan, the gorges of the Conches and the dry stone wall constructions built by the peasant builders.
